Here is a basic approach towards going after relief teacher work either by agency or personally making contact with selected schools yourself.
There are a few different agencies that you can register with and their websites are attached below. Some are more regional based then others. The first four are Ministry of Education Accredited Teacher Recruitment Agencies. Please go to each agency’s website to understand their differences. All provide recruitment for dad to day, short term and full time teacher placement. Each agency has a registration process and some ask for payment.
In most cases the agencies are looking for this information to become registered with them. They may also interview you and see what your strengths and interests are. Once you are registered you maybe contacted in the morning with regards to possible work.
• A current NZ Teachers Registration
• Appropriate immigration status ie; Work permit or residence
• References verbal and written
Below is information on relief teaching from the Oasis Education website. Some information maybe for Oasis clients only but overall steps are standard to organise one’s own relief teaching work:
For all Teachers wishing to apply for relief (supply) teaching
Please read the following important information regarding relief teaching.
1. To get paid you need a Ministry of Education (MOE) number. Please note that this is not your Teachers Registration number. To get an MOE number you need to…
-
Complete the New Appointment Form For Teaching Staff (ESP1), remember you need to include a bank deposit slip and the school will need to fill out some areas for you also.
-
YOU will need to fax this form along with your Teachers Weekly Individual Relief Payment Form to either Multi Serve (for Primary or Intermediate Teachers) or Pay Serve (for Secondary Teachers).
-
YOU will only need to do this once and then you will be issued with an MOE number. MOE numbers do get archived so if you have just resigned from a position or you have not worked for a few months then you will need to complete this form again.
2. You also need to complete the Salary Assessment Form (ESP7)
Attach certified copies of appropriate documents and then ask the Principal to sign it for you. (Remember you need to complete the form before asking the Principal to sign it.) . This completed form with attached certified copies then needs to be sent by post (not faxed) to: The Salary Assessment Unit, PO Box 4044, Christchurch. YOU NEED TO POST THIS YOURSELF. This is very important because if Multiserve or Payserve do not know what your qualifications or experience are they won’t be able to pay you on the correct pay scale.
3. Each day when you have finished relieving you will need to fill out the Weekly Individual Relief Payment Form (ESP15). Copies of this are kept in the school office. You may claim travel (less the first 10 kms for primary and the first 20 kms for secondary). We recommend not to claim more than 50kms return. You do want the school to want you back!
At the end of the week/day ask the school whether you can fax your weekly pay sheet (using their machine) and if not you will have to make your own arrangements.
There are schools who email the weekly individual relief payment forms in so please check.
Please keep a record of the days and schools you have relieved at for your own records.
When you receive your MOE number it is a good idea to always keep the number with you when you go relieving. In the end you will know your MOE number off by heart!
Please let us know your MOE when you receive it so we can also keep it on file.
You will be paid fortnightly.
